Maryland Sees Table Games Legislation Introduced

Lawmakers in the U.S State of Maryland introduced legislation Wednesday to amend the state’s constitution in order to authorise video lottery licence holders to offer table games such as poker, roulette and blackjack.
 
House Bill 608 proposes a constitutional amendment that would automatically authorise table gaming for video lottery terminal (VLT) licence holders, for the primary purpose of raising revenue for the education of children in public schools, the construction of public schools and capital improvements, construction of community colleges and public senior higher education institutions.
 
If approved by lawmakers, the amendment will be put to a public referendum at the next general election in November 2010.
 
The introduction of the bill comes less than a week after the Delaware legislature voted to allow table gaming in the state, which itself followed the passing of similar legislation in Pennsylvania earlier this year.
 
Presented to the House Ways and Means Committee yesterday by Del. Frank S. Turner, HB608 already has fifteen cosponsors.
